Hi Teachers!
I just wanted to touch base with all of you about a program that Lisa Mangelsdorf and I will be starting. It is called the “Wednesday Walker” program. This program will be very similar to the mileage club that we had here a few years back.
Our program will start, Wednesday, November 5 and we will have the program every Wednesday during lunch recess for the 2nd – 5th grades. Lisa and I will cover the directions and specifics of this program in our Physical Education classes. You will not be obligated to this program at all (unless you would like to volunteer).
The basics of this program will consist of 2nd- 5th graders walking during their lunch recess on Wednesdays on our ¼ mile walking track. We will record laps of the walkers on Wednesdays, recognize various accomplishments that walkers achieve, set personal goals, and set class goals. Rewards will be given to students and classes that reach their particular goals. Again, Lisa and I will cover the all aspects of this program in our P.E. classes.
The only thing that I am asking of all of you is that we could surely use parent volunteers every Wednesday to help with the minor set-up, recording of laps, and putting away of the minor set-up. It should be pretty simple and easy. It just would take the lunch recess time for the parent volunteers. So, it you all could mention that Lisa and I are currently seeking parent volunteers to help run the program in your notes home and newsletters, we would both surely appreciate it. If any of your parents are interested in helping, please have them contact Lisa or I at #6817. I have also asked Lisa Skillman to place this info in the next few Hawk Highlights.
As the school year moves on, we may add another “walking day” for the students. We could even add one for the teachers (?
!! ).
Lisa and I both THANK YOU for your assistance in getting this program started!

What will be the day after the day after tomorrow, if the day before the day before yesterday was Monday?

Stop teasing Sam!
Which would you choose? You have thirty-five dollar bills, or you have thirty, five dollar bills.
Wait ’till you hear “Abe and Cheerleader” at our Candlelight Dinner. Same words, different meanings.

By this Friday we should be finished reading the science chapter on magnetism and electricity. We will probably continue the hands on activities the week after intersession.
Once we have finished reading the chapter, the students can start studying for the test. They should focus on:
Matching the following words with their brief definitions; charge, static electricity, electric field, electric current, circuit, electric cell, conductor, insulator, resistor, series circuit, parallel circuit, magnet, magnetic poles, magnetic field, and electromagnet. There will be nine multiple choice questions on: objects with charged particles; objects with positive charges; copper wire; a bar magnet’s pull; when magnets attract; electromagnets in motors do what?; ways to control, and a way not to control an electromagnet; and the difference between parallel and series circuits. Under critical thinking/essay, know about how a compass works and how are magnetism and electricity alike. There are three inference questions that the students should be able to figure out if they thoroughly read the chapter covering bar magnets and complete circuits and the path the electricity follows in a circuit.

The latest comment we had was from Tori Fallis who lives in China, but checked out our blog in Borneo. I wonder what she was doing there.
Sarah S. is thinking about going to University High. Wow!
Two areas for parents to watch for in math: the students who are underachieving aren’t carefully reading the lesson and following the mathematical examples; each day they are not going over the ones they had wrong. We need to work this from both ends.
Several students are excelling and showing growth and independence. Intersession and report cards are almost here. We are almost at the end of the beginning. Thanks Winston C.

Almost. Yes, again on the AR book read in class we had students who weren’t carefully reading it and they earned poor scores and lowered their reading grades. The same students who finish early, waste time, and become an annoyance for the other students. Nothing new. I’ve seen this at the beginning of every year.
But sever students did shape up. We had three hundreds on the test, four nineties, and three of our high readers haven’t taken the test yet. We will continue to work the problem.
Looks like a normal week except we will have picture day on Thursday, the 2nd at 10:15 a.m. Have them dressed up. I’ll take pictures too. We will start a new book, Loser and we should be able to get a lot of science completed. Check those planners. The projects should be getting finished.
