Learning to Learn – We Shall Overcome

August 24, 2008 · 2 Comments

Learning to learn, as previously stated, starts with the planner. The students must learn to record what is due on the day it is due. They must also learn to look at their planners to make sure the work is done on time. They must also look at their planners to know what to take home and what to bring to school. Sometimes, like the Math Folder or Friday Folder, it is just a matter of getting something signed. It is still an assignment and still a indication of good or poor organizational skills.

Last week we had the following missing or incomplete assignments:

  • Math Folders – 7
  • Friday Folders – 1
  • Vocabulary – 6
  • Edit sentences – 4
  • math homework – 4
  • Reading practice sheets – 4
  • grammar – 3
  • spelling – 1

This is typical of the beginning of a new year. Most of this work could have been finished in school.

The fourth graders need to learn the routine and use their planners. During the first quarter, they might need their parents to look in their planners with them.

All the kids can learn to accomplish this except those who have parents who enable or have a laundry list of excuses.

Five fourth graders have no missing assignments this year. Eight fifth graders have no missing assignments. They are off to a great start and should be proud of themselves. I am. Let’s help the others become responsible. We shall overcome.
