Our Second Day of Scool

August 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

In math we learned about place value. We started reading Being of Two Minds. We played the Name Game and Madi could name the entire class forwards and backwards blindfolded. We wrote a paragraph about the best thing that happened in school. We had the band, orchestra, and choir assembly .Corinna visited today and we worked on our posters of a successful classroom. And every student had their homework completed.

The Daily Edit and Edit Quizzes

August 8, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Yesterday we introduced the students to our math procedures and the daily. edit.

Monkey Girl liked our “First Day of School Blog.”

Today we will be introducing them to our vocabulary lessons, Read Aloud MAI style, and our research paper.

The daily edit is part of the LANGUAGE SKILLS grade on the report card. Our first edit quiz is on Friday, August 15th. Each day the students come in and there are two edit sentences on the board. The students write them down exactly as they are written. Opposite each line it tells them how many corrections they are loking for. They are not expected to already know them. The students write their corrections in red ink. We review all the corrections together. When there is a correction that the student didn’t know, they record it in blue ink. The edit sheet should never leave their trapper. When they get home you should be able to see this sheet evrry day. They only need to study the blue corrections to get ready for the quiz. They should’t just memorize the corrections other than the spllling ones. They should be learning the punctuations rules and the correct grammar useage. If the students are disorganized, and they can’t keep the edit sheet in their trapper, they will be deducted 25% on their score on the edit quiz. Learning the organizational skills is more important than learning the answers on the quiz. In MAI we identify what we don’t know, not knowing is a good thing if we do something about it, but our primary purpose is learning to be an organized student who can meet due dates and skilled at being prepared for tests and knowing strategies for successfully taking them.

The following is a sample of an edit quiz:
